Blog No.41

I have nearly finished the Stantas drawings.  As Dan says I am doing every one by hand and I have to say they do vary a bit which is I suppose is what you want in something that is handmade.  Some look  exactly like Stalin, a few look a bit like Frank Zappa or the owner of your local Turkish restaurant, I hope those of you who pre-ordered the book enjoy them.  I had to relearn a few of the skills I haven't used since art school.
My friend Mandy pointed out I forgot to put in the listings that on the 11 th of September I’ll be doing a signing at News From Nowhere, Liverpool’s wonderful independent political bookshop and as an extra incentive for those who have read the book or the extract in the Sunday Times, that “great comic creation” as Frank Cottrel Boyce called her-my mother Molly will also be there.

After the reading at the Roundhouse tonight I keep having visions of Alexei in a donkey jacket, miner's boot ...and a tutu.

It was a lot of fun. If you get the chance to go get to one of the other readings (all listed in the appearances page)

Hello Alexei,

A slight diversion from the theme of this blog.....

In about 1982 my future wife was 16 years old living a suppressed life in a Cheshire convent school (well Congleton girls’ grammar, but a similar regime) and, with few alternatives, beginning to find short, fat, bald Scousers attractive…..

Around that time one of your “production team” harassed a selection of idiots (including me, a 22 year old exiled Scouser) on Piccadilly station concourse. I had to say something like “my cheese mites are communists”, and the result was subsequently broadcast in possibly your first ever TV shoe or series.

We met in 1994 and were married in 1995.

I’d like to think I did a good job of subliminal advertising for Scousers in general in that very short clip, although my wife claims to have never seen it. So, in exchange for being an integral part in your subsequent huge success, could you point us at where we could find recordings of your first shows, including that one of course? I am probably wrong, but I don’t think it was “Alexei Sayle’s Stuff” as the dates seem too late.

Lots of Love,
John (and Liz)

The book is a great read so far, I am not disapointed.

I love the book. The one thing that got me slightly worried is that Molly sounds just a bit too much like me. In fact, I think I'll come to Liverpool just to see your mum. It's giving me sleepless nights, I got a 14yr old son and he's an only childl. Oh fuck.

many thanks for the drawing, a shifty eyed old uncle joe (you could have given him a star of david on his hat). the book was a great read (I 'm currently reading 'Lucky George' which gives a different perspective) but as it was discounted to £12.80 (inc P&P) and then the drawing was sent first class, £1.49, plus the time of the person at Sceptre who wrote the label on the oversized and expensive envelope (the drawing arrived un-bent) and the comps slip congratulating me on my win, i have just bought Barcelona Plates for 1p on amazon; i dont think you are getting the hang of this capitalist lark.

Thanks for my Stanta, made me smile, a very good likeness of Stalin (maybe slightly less like Santa though) :-) x

Alexei,

Just wanted to thank you for signing our copy of Stalin ate my Homework and agreeing to our suggestion for the dedication ("To Val and Mike - still livin' in me jag" love Bobby. It was lovely to meet you and your mum.

Please stop wasting time doing other things and get on with writing the next volume !!

Val & Mike.

HI Alexei, Thank you for signing my copy of SAMH. It was great to meet you and your wife, though it's true, your mum was the real star. It was slightly intimidating to hear her recall details of a communist election victory in Amsterdam that most people here don't even know happened.
I hope you get to write the next episode of you memoirs soon!

I must say Alexei, I found your attempts at lifting the Michael Ball show to an intellectual level higher than 2 limp cheese sandwiches and a sweet cup of Tea, highly amusing!!!
you can only try I suppose:))

Hi, Fraternal greetings comrade. Is your new book as funny as Great Bus Journeys of the World or the Coalition Government Joke Book by Tweedledum & Tweedledee? If so, i wd be tempted to look out for a used copy in Oxfam next January. Take care.

Hi Alexei,

I enjoyed the extract in yesterday's Observer magazine but it appears that I've arrived too late to the party. I don't suppose there's any chance of a signed drawing of Stalin crossed with Rupert Murdoch for us latecomers?
