Blog 63

I think for me I've actually been quite busy recently.  I had an article in Fridays Guardian about Polish cinema and today Saturday I begin a new motoring column in the Telegraph. Right after the four nights at the Soho theatre I did a few days on the TV series New Tricks.  It  was fun working in TV again and that is a production that runs like clockwork so I was generally home by lunchtime.  Funnily enough in the week that I was filming New Tricks (though the two events are not connected) somebody tried the gold ring con on me twice.  What happens in the gold ring con is somebody walking along in front of you suddenly bends down and seems to pick up a gold ring that they've found on the floor, they then turn to you and ask if you think its genuine, then they spin some story about how they have to leave the country but do you want to buy it?  You thenbuy what you think is a valuable gold ring only to discover that it is worthless.   Now normally nobody comes near me in the street, chuggers look the other way and people never ask me for directions bu these people (one was a man one a woman) took me for a mug.  It must be that in whatever Balkan country they come from I look like a wealthy but highly gullible or possibly greedy gent who can easily be conned.  I'd like to take a trip to their country to see loads of mees swanning around buying lucky heather and thinking Nick Clegg's a nice guy.  Kaboom!  Satire!

I'm glad everybody liked Question Time.  As late as Monday I wasn't going to do it but then I thought I might as well give it a try.  It's actually quite a challenge because you want to be funny but you don't want to be flippant about what are sometimes serious issues.  I think in terms of panel members it was an easy ride, I wonder what it would be like if the other non politician was one of those right wing nutcases like Melanie Philips or David Starkey.  If I do it again maybe we'll find out.

Alexei, I don't think you could hear me through the tv. I said "the problem with capitalism is not that there are too many capitalists, but that there are too few."

Well wasn't Question Time great? - No not particularly. I was waiting for some raw, cutting, witty comments from Alexei who seems to have lost his touch..a swear word thrown in - how radical. Would have rocked Dimbleby and the Beeb 30 years ago....
Alexei put in the 'novelty/comedy/bloke most likely to say something radical' guest spot, there are many people who would love the chance to spout their opinions (ill-informed, biased or whatever is irrelevant) or to millions and tell them some home truths - clearly Alexei is not upp to the task or was heavily edited.
When the dumb question ' who is to blame for the panic buying at petrol stations - the union or the government', I was hoping that if one person could have spoken the truth it would have been Alexei.. ' The people to blame are the idiot, selfish twats who are looking out for no. 1 as usual !' would have done.
Why did'nt you say anything about people listening to what some old-fart MP told them to do about petro? - HAS THE NATION HAD SOME KIND OF MENTAL FOOKING BREAKDOWN? - If you get your instructions from the government then you deserve to be roasted slowly and be poked at with pointed sticks.
You even missed the open goal in the question of grammar schools - ' I think the teaching of grammar in schools would be a great idea and should be encouraged '.

The funniest part was that dreadful Lib-Dem woman who did'nt get the joke about the fire. She always has the expression of someone who has recently undergone some kind of anal surgery.

Fkin Hell Alexei maybe it's the constant drip of royalties that's dulled your senses, you certainly dulled mine.
I never agreed with your politics but I did admire your attitude, Shame.

Wow, you mean you'd make a much better Alexei Sayle than the original? And with 'better' politics? That's a bit funny!

Hey Alexei and the regulars,

A tiny, barely imperceptible movement is beginning on FB or there to be a 30 year reunion of some kind for The Young Ones, thoughts anyone?

Sort of "Where are these people now?" sort of thing? They went through college, got careers, thought themselves much smarter than they were as students, decided they were unbearable really, and when all 4 got back together, found they still hated each other for the same reasons..

Everyone hates students, even ex-students hate students. The only ones that don't and think that they are graet are Students!

Actually, didn't Vyv and Neil meet up in a commercial? Vyv was a stock-market trader and Neil was a middle class 'save the planet' thirtysomething with tidier hair and clothes.. I forget the product/company it was the advert for

Kind of like that, yeah, though the general populace of the page is leaning more towards a 30th anniversary documentary on G.O.L.D or Dave. Some people have said that Rik and Ade got divorced and don't speak any more, which sounds sad. Though somebody did point out that of the cast, Alexei still has his comedic credibility, what with Ade Edmondson doing travel shows for ITV, and Rik Mayall doing ale adverts.

Of them all Alexei is still doing the odd stand-up show, 'pricking pomposity' on Question Time, and still being funny and highly thought of on TV and in print. So that's nice.

An actual sitcom 30 years on couldn't possibly work, could it...?

I thought the Young Ones were blown up.

The last time I saw Rik Mayall he was Prof Predictor in the Hunt for Tony Blair
in which Nigel Planer was expertly cast as Peter Mandelson

The last time I saw Adrian Edmondson he was in Holby City
That's the last thing you need when you're going to have a serious operation...
...to be looked after by Vyvyan.
Still that's NHS restructuring.

While Christopher Ryan seems to have become all the Sontarans in Doctor Who

Hi Alexei, I saw you on Sunday in Liverpool and just wanted to say how much you made me laugh which is hard I tell you!! I particularly liked the comparison between Palestine and Israel compared subtly to Liverpool and Cockneys and the slogan! And your Psycho story re you mother was priceless as I have an 89 year old father and know exactly what you mean. He's tied up a lot of the social services in North Wales .... You are always the best comedian for me (the Comic Strip was priceless) as there is always a serious side in a good comedian if you only scratch the surface of the story. I don't think everyone gets that. I wanted to meet you after but was a bit shy and expect you get fed up of that. I also had a Primark bag in my hand so worried you might have though I've just come in off the street :-) Best of luck and wishes and I will come again to see you soon. Well done for supporting Maysoon. She was good to. But not as good as you ... You know what I mean (The Lakes joke)! Brilliant .......
