Blog 93

Just to let you all know Radio 4 have moved the transmission of "Sandwich Bar" back a couple of weeks so it will now begin on Tuesday the 15 of November but excitingly a second series is already in the works for all you fans of non-existent sandwiches and imaginary rolls.

And yes thanks for reminding me, I didn't know my edition of "Stars and Cars" is going out this week.  It'll be interesting to see how much of the Landrover stuff they use, when I turned up at the rural location I saw the producers had ordered up an ambulance and paramedics to be standing by and it turned out they were very nearly needed!

BLOG 93a

I saw one of those old "Comedy Roots"  things about the Pythons on London Live last night.  The quality of the video tape used for the interviews makes it look like it was shot about a hundred years ago and most of the contributors labelled "comedian" you have never heard of but as somebody mentioned for some reason I am there.  I have no idea when I shot those interviews or for what purpose but what struck me is that I am being the most unbelievable ponce! Speaking in a slow affected manner, making bizarre hand gestures and slumped in my seat in a way that is frankly insulting to whoever was interviewing me.  I said to Linda  "If I saw that I would have thought 'what a terrible git that bloke is'."  And she replied.  "A lot of people did think that..."

Whoever asked what political party I support.  I do honestly think that its important that as a political comedian you do not give support to any one party as you have to be free to criticise everyone.  On the other hand I think with the election of Jeremy Corbyn there is an epochal moment to make a fundamental change in the way politics is done in this country and I get very impatient with any of my friend who don't get on board with that idea.  A lot seem to be looking for ways to dismiss him and what he represents, either swallowing that he was somehow responsible for brexit crap or the anti-semitism bollocks.

Thanks Alexei, I just wanted to let you know I have recently been in hysterics watching your series 'Alexei Sayle's Stuff' - people talk about The Day Today being influential but this is just as good! Keep writing we need more books too! WE LOVE YOU ALEXEI!
I worked for Liberty of London 1997-2009 and I cycled everyday from Hackney and I saw you a couple of times on your bike behind the British Museum, I miss those days. I'm in Ilkley now, if you are ever up here there is a pint of Yorkshire ale awaiting! :)

Wahey Blithering, you're back! Did you go to the Lowry? There was spittle flying everywhere. Flashes of silvery saliva perpetually picked out in the spotlight and a few good whole wads of it. Ooh that poor bastard in the front row. It wasn't you was it? I do like to imagine that it was.

Stars in Their Cars was great, well done to Alexei and Paddy. I notice the green man on your shirt is (I think) the sign from the pedestrian crossings in Berlin? Great shirt and obviously very fitting (in terms of the show that is).

Dear Alexei,
I'm a newcomer to your blog, so I'm sorry if you've already answered this, but: do you support any politcal parties these days (if you don't mind me asking)?
By the way, I loved Thatcher Stole My trousers

I just got to the end of Thatcher Stole My Trousers and found the pictures and ...

...we finally get to see Linda ...

It's really sweet.

I used to ofter wonder about the private life of 1980s shouty Alexei. Sometimes he would say he was single ...sometimes married... a bit like the way Laurel & Hardy were single or not as the need arose ...

I'm sure there's something more insightful I could add to this but I can't think of it at the moment...

I didn't think you were being a git (mind you, I like people talking poncily about comedy), but I laughed when you drank from a glass of water and did a massive burp halfway through your point... And they left it in.
I'm a bit pissed off I missed that Python one. I don't think London Live have a catch up service.

Hi all

If you want to hear Alexei talk about books and stuff (not Stuff), I've just seen that he's the latest guest on Robin & Josie's Book Shambles.
Season 4, Episode 7.

Imaginary Sandwich Bar was brilliant.

I just started listening to your imaginary sandwich bar, and love it. But enough of the platitudes. As fellow Liverpool Jew (there are a few of us left) your humor speaks to me on a visceral level. I'm currently residing in Miami (for my sins), We are so bereft of good comedy here, would you consider redressing the balance? Let me know if you fancy a trip here and see if we can make it happen I know the local comedy theater here. a young organisation but growing.

Hope to see you soon?

I'm listening to " Sandwich Bar" at the moment - I'd forgotten how great and original your writing is. Thanks Mr. Sayle for some wonderful surreal laughs.

Sandwich Bar is brilliant. I'd also forgotten how great your material is, but this is maybe the best yet.

Hi Alexei, the response to Sandwich Bar on the page has been brilliant! Great comments aplenty. Been listening to it online before work in the morning :)

Here's to series 2

Hi Alexei

I've only heard the first episode so far and I really enjoyed the story of your lodger - it reminded me of your short stories. That mixed with more traditional stand up reminded me a little of Merry Go Round's approach. I will need to listen again as soon as I can. Really very good.

Also, as the paperback version is out, how about a change of picture? The black and yellow is very eye catching.

Oh and also also, I wasn't the Russell from the 8th December. I have reverted to using my surname to avoid confusion. On my part.
I thought I was going doolally for a minute there.

Enjoying your radio 4 series very much. Looking forward to series 2.

Now in a reverie remembering Alexei Sayle's Stuff, which was in many ways quite similar in spirit come to think of it!

Very glad that the Imaginary Sandwich Bar is getting a second series. It was beautifully written and warmly performed (and I'd buy an mp3 of the Brecht/Weill theme tune as well). Hope you do more readings of Thatcher.. and that one of them will be in Pontardawe. If not see you in Condor.
